Modem
A Modulator-Demodulator (modem) is a device that makes transmission of signals via telephone lines possible. This is carried out by converting computer signals to analogue. These used to be the most the common way a user would connect their pc to the internet or to a network. There are newer technologies that do not require any signal conversions, such as ethernet. One would have expected such new technologies, which are still referred to as modems to go by a new name.
The Modem's transmission speed is at a very slow rate because it uses telephone lines. The rate at which data is transmitted ranges from 56kbps to 112kbps. A broadband connection and other forms of Internet connections offer greater speeds, up to 2GB/s.
